ABout the Project
I am developing an interactive animation installation using the recordings of people living long-term with HIV and of the children of those who have died of AIDS-related illnesses to bring attention to lesser-known narratives about the virus. “The Animation of Mortality” is inspired by a loved one's death and is named after a book by Terry Gilliam. The installation will be contained in a room built from fabric, wood and aluminum to look like a domestic interior. Visitors will enter the room through an antique door and through the use of coding software, motion sensors and short-throw projectors, they will be allowed to trigger animations in wall projections of patterned wallpaper. These animations will be narrated by the recollections of people living with HIV and children of those killed by AIDS-related illnesses. Each animation will grow into fleshy, nebulous tumors that spread around the room and connect together like a virus. The volume of each audio testimonial will be determined according to their order of activation. The work will evolve independently of me. Each repeat visitor will find it changed and not recognize their hand in its evolution. I will design this installation to be lightweight, portable, easily assembled and disassembled. It will be adapted for temporary installation in schools, hospitals, nonprofits and community spaces. Each exhibition will coincide with panel discussions on hospice care, long-term survivor needs, living with HIV, sex education, and the legacy of living in the closet. The Animation of Mortality will bring renewed attention to HIV through the universal experiences of aging and parental loss.
