I am very grateful to have recently received a grant from NYSCA in support of my interactive projection project about HIV: "The Animation of Mortality". While I am still fundraising to pay for equipment, construction and a studio rental, this grant will help subsidize the significant costs of technical and administrative support. I'd like to offer thanks to all my advisors and supporters, including (but not limited to):
  • The Fiscal Sponsorship Team at the New York Foundation for the Arts
  • The Brooklyn Arts Council
  • Melody Loveless and the staff at Harvestworks
  • Jen Zelnick MSW, ScD and Max O'Donnell M.D
  • Whitney Joiner, Founder of the Recollectors Project and Magazine Articles Editor at The Washington Post
  • Every member of the Recollectors
  • Emily Colucci, art curator, critic and publisher of Filthy Dreams
  • Michael Hager, Hager Health and Impac+ NYC
  • Bruce Ward, Writer and Former National Director of the AIDS Prevention Hotline
  • Meredith Hawkins M.D
  • Daniel Littlewood, Vox Media
  • My Family
and especially to everyone who has contributed their family stories to my project.

I'm pleased to announce that my film, The Animation of Mortality, will be included in this year's  The Body Electric exhibition in Ottawa, Canada. The Body Electric was launched at International Conference on Residency Education in 2014.  It includes a selection of visual art, in a range of media – photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and film –  that reflect the conference theme from new critical and artistic angles. This year's works explore ideas about Diversity in Residency Education: Training in a World of Differences. The exhibition is sponsored by the Royal College of Physician's and Surgeons.

Photophobia is the annual festival of short-format contemporary media, film, video and moving image presented in partnership between the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Artists Inc. Established in 1999, Photophobia was Hamilton’s first film and video festival dedicated to the development of experimental time-based media at a time when there were no such platforms in the Hamilton community. Not confined by restrictions or themes, Photophobia showcases contemporary practitioners who test the boundaries of the medium in a free, multi-part festival series presented outdoors under the cover of night. All screenings are free and accessible.

The short film that inspired my interactive installation will be playing as part of the second program:

August 10th, 2019
8:30 to 11 PM
Hamilton Artists Inc.’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard
155 James Street North,

Hamilton ON(at the north west corner of James and Cannon Streets)

On June 15th, "The Animation of Mortality", the film in which my interactive project is based,  was screened in Toronto as part of Nuit Rose. Nuit Rose is an annual queer art and performance festival that coincides with Pride Month. This was a very special moment for me. Not only was it the first time in decades since I've shown work in my hometown, but it was installed at the 519, a community center that offers LGBTQ2S support services. I was sorry to miss the opening but hope to bring my interactive project to the festival next year. Looking forward to connecting with Toronto activists and Recollectors when I'm there in July.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Brooklyn Arts Fund, I have begun working on interactive tools for the Animation of Mortality with Melody Loveless at Harvestworks. Melody Loveless is a musician and multimedia artist who creates live-coded music, generative sound installations and multi-sensory performances. Here, Melody is showing how my project will use objects in Max/MSP/Jitter to integrate audio and visuals. Thank you to Carol Parkinson, for partnering us to work on my project!
